What's it like to be an Architect?
An Architect (Kaihoahoa Whare) plans the design and alteration of building projects. They create building plans, provide advice to clients and work with other professionals and tradespeople throughout the building process, including Engineers, Surveyors, Builders and Lawyers. Architects are often consulted on all aspects of a building project to ensure the project comes together as planned. They may specialise in designing residential or commercial buildings.
Tasks and duties
- Envisioning and drawing designs, both by hand and computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
- Designing around constraining factors such as project budget, local council legislation, town planning and environmental impacts.
- Conferring with builders about project feasibility.
- Applying for planning permission.
- Writing and presenting reports, applications, proposals and contracts.
- Adapting plans based on local government feedback and resolving any issues that may arise throughout the build.
- Advising clients throughout the build, and managing the project in conjunction with other professionals.
- Travelling to the building site and different offices for meetings regularly.
How to become an Architect
You usually need to complete a masters degree and register with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board to become an Architect.0

Complete a Bachelor of Architectural Studies. This usually takes three years of full-time study.

Complete a Master of Architecture (Professional). This usually takes two years of full-time study.

Secure an internship to build experience.
- 4.
Apply for registration with the New Zealand Registered Architects Board. There are multiple pathways to become registered which require a mix of qualifications and experience. Your registration will be reviewed periodically.
