What's it like to be an Automotive Electrician?
An Automotive Electrician (Kaimahi Hiko ā-Waka) specialises in working with electrical and electronic systems in vehicles. They install equipment and components, perform maintenance and repairs, and diagnose and fix electrical faults. They may specialise in working with passenger, commercial or industrial vehicles. Automotive Electricians need some knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical repairs. They work in automotive repair shops and car dealerships or may run their own business.
Tasks and duties
- Isolating and diagnosing electrical faults or issues in computer-based equipment in vehicles.
- Repairing, testing and maintaining electrical parts and wiring.
- Dismantling and removing components as required.
- Discussing problems with vehicle owners.
How to become an Automotive Electrician
You usually need to complete an apprenticeship to become a qualified Automotive Electrician.

Complete a New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Electrical Engineering (Level 4). This takes four years and is completed as part of an apprenticeship which involves a mix of theory and workplace training. You will need to be employed to complete this qualification so look for apprenticeship opportunities with local employers and training organisations.
