What's it like to be a Design Engineer?
Design Engineers work to create and improve a range of products, machinery, systems, or structures. They may generate concepts, model designs using CAD software, conduct simulations and tests for functionality, and coordinate with interdepartmental teams to ensure the effective implementation of design goals. A Design Engineer typically operates in diverse industries, including automotive, construction, electronics, and manufacturing.
Tasks and duties
- Developing new product designs and redesigning existing products to meet client, market and production requirements.
- Evaluating and testing designs to ensure they meet safety standards, regulations and guidelines.
- Creating blueprints and technical drawings for manufacturing using computer-aided design (CAD) tools.
- Working with other engineers, production staff, sales staff and customer service personnel to resolve design issues.
- Analysing the feasibility, design, operation and performance of equipment, components and systems for production.
- Incorporating feedback into the design process to modify and refine designs.
- Documenting and maintaining technical specifications such as material, dimension, and part lists.
