What's it like to be an Enrolled Nurse?
Enrolled Nurses (ENs) provide nursing care and support under the direction of Registered Nurses (RNs). They assist in creating and implementing patient care plans, help patients to complete daily hygiene activities and provide wound care and pre-and post-operative care. In addition to working in hospitals and community health centres, Enrolled Nurses often work in aged care facilities and hospices. They are required to be teamed with a registered health professional.
Tasks and duties
- Observing, measuring and recording patients' vital statistics and reporting changes in conditions to RNs and doctors.
- Providing physical and emotional support to patients and their families.
- Assisting with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, showering and dressing.
- Working to a care plan set by RNs, doctors and therapists.
- Writing detailed patient notes.
- Providing pre-and post-operative nursing care.
- Providing wound care.
How to become an Enrolled Nurse
You need to complete a diploma in nursing (or international equivalent) to become an Enrolled Nurse.

Complete a New Zealand Diploma in Enrolled Nursing (Level 5) through one of the Nursing Council of New Zealand’s approved providers. This usually takes 18 months. You will need to pass a skills assessment and a final examination.

Get your Annual Practising Certificate (APC) from the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Your certificate must be renewed annually.
