What's it like to be a Finance Business Partner?
Finance Business Partners are experienced financial advisors who work with businesses to provide commercial analysis, insights and advice. A Finance Business Partner’s goal is to provide targeted financial advice to help the business grow, improve performance, and meet and exceed customers’ or clients’ expectations. They will identify financial risks and opportunities and may work with data to model and visualise these risks and opportunities.
Tasks and duties
- Partnering with business units to deliver strategic financial insights.
- Coordinating budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Developing financial models to aid decision-making.
- Periodic reporting for senior management.
- Delivering financial literacy training to staff.
- Reviewing client accounts and projects to identify risks and underperformance of finances early.
- Undertaking due diligence research on acquisitions and mergers.
- Communicating opportunities for improvement.
- Developing and maintaining relationships across the business.
How to become a Finance Business Partner
Finance Business Partners are generally experienced professionals with university qualifications and industry experience.

Study for a bachelor degree in economics, finance, or accounting. This usually takes three years of full-time study at university.

Gain at least three years of on-the-job experience in a junior finance role, such as Accountant.

Consider becoming a member of Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand (CA ANZ) to improve your credibility and job prospects. You’ll need at least three years’ work experience to do this.

Look for opportunities for promotion or to move into a Finance Business Partner role. Finance Business Partners usually need extensive professional experience.
