What's it like to be a Hairdresser?
A Hairdresser (Kaikutikuti Makawe) typically works in salons where they cut, colour, wash, treat and style hair in a variety of ways. Hairdressers also give advice on hair care and treatments and may need to make product sales. Whether working for an employer or being self-employed, Hairdressers are often required to work outside of regular hours to suit their clients’ schedules.
Tasks and duties
- Shampooing, conditioning and providing hair treatments.
- Styling clients’ hair with scissors, razors and clippers.
- Keeping utensils and the premises clean and sanitary.
- Communicating with clients to understand the haircut or style they want.
- Selling hair products.
How to become a Hairdresser
You can become a Hairdresser by completing qualifications or an apprenticeship.
- 1.
Consider completing a one-year New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing – Professional Stylist (Level 4).
- 2.
Alternatively, find a salon that is willing to support you through a Hairdressing apprenticeship. The benefit of an apprenticeship is that you get on-the-job training while working and being paid. Upon completion, which typically takes two to four years, you’ll get a Certificate in Hairdressing.
