What's it like to be a Law Clerk?
Law Clerks primarily assist Judges, Solicitors and Barristers by conducting legal research, preparing legal documents, and keeping track of case files. They may also undertake thorough research and interpret laws and rulings. Law Clerks work in a variety of settings, including courts, law firms, corporate legal departments or government agencies.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting legal research and collecting information on legal precedents related to specific cases.
- Drafting legal documents such as briefs, appeals, contracts and legal agreements under the supervision of a lawyer.
- Assisting Lawyers with case preparation including gathering evidence, organising files and coordinating with involved parties.
- Reviewing and ensuring accuracy of legal documents before they are filed.
- Navigating legal and governmental databases to gather relevant information.
- Participating in client meetings and court proceedings to note down important points.
- Performing administrative tasks including scheduling appointments, answering calls, managing case documents and maintaining a Lawyer's schedule.
