What's it like to be a Relationship Manager?
Relationship Managers manage relationships between a company and its stakeholders. This may include relationships between internal units within a company, and external relationships with clients, communities, governments, suppliers and vendors. Relationship Managers analyse data and other information to assess risks to existing and future relationships.
Tasks and duties
- Understanding customer needs and developing strategies to address them.
- Approaching new customers to establish relationships.
- Resolving customer complaints.
- Gaining knowledge of competitors and conducting competitor analysis.
- Identifying key personnel in client companies or organisations and cultivating relationships with them.
- Working with the aim of client preservation and contract renewal.
- Communicating opportunities for upselling or cross-selling with the sales team.
How to become a Relationship Manager
There is no set pathway to become a Relationship Manager, but many have a mix of qualifications and experience. Sales experience may be preferred by some employers.

Complete a qualification, such as a New Zealand Diploma in Business (Marketing and Sales) (Level 5).
- 2.
Alternatively, consider completing a bachelor degree majoring in marketing, business, commerce or a related field. This usually takes three years of full-time study and may provide broader career options.

Develop experience in an industry of your choice across one or more roles such as Account Manager.
