What's it like to be a Systems Architect?
A Systems Architect typically develops complex computer systems for a variety of organisations across many sectors. They bridge the gap between hardware and software, understanding the needs of both, to design efficient and effective systems. This involves detailed planning, initially conceptualising the system and then creating a practical blueprint for its development. Systems Architects often work within a team of IT professionals and liaise with stakeholders to meet business requirements. They also take responsibility for integrating new systems into company operations, ensuring smooth transitions with minimal disruption.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing the technological needs of a company and developing infrastructure solutions to cater to these needs.
- Building, testing and implementing internal and external networks for organisations.
- Working closely with information technology management to coordinate the design and setup of systems architecture.
- Identifying new technology solutions that could improve the speed, efficiency and ease of operations.
- Evaluating systems engineering, talent recruiting and capital budgets to ensure cost-efficiency.
- Coordinating with project managers and other software development professionals to ensure technical aspects will work within the overall project.
- Maintaining documentation to show how the systems architecture was designed, built and is currently operating.
