What's it like to be a Testing Analyst?
A Testing Analyst (Kaitātari Whakamātautau) runs tests on computer software to ensure it’s ready for release. They design and implement various tests to discover and diagnose bugs, identify problems and analyse the software’s performance in a networked environment. Testing Analysts need knowledge of software development and quality assurance processes. They work for software and technology companies, IT consultancies, and in the IT department of companies in other industries.
Tasks and duties
- Designing, developing and documenting comprehensive testing plans.
- Performing tests on software and hardware products to find limitations and errors.
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting faults.
- Participating in the software development process.
- Writing and updating user documentation and operational procedures.
- Testing the integrity of new products in a networked environment.
- Devising and deploying fixes and improvements.
How to become a Testing Analyst
You can become a Testing Analyst without formal qualifications, but some employers prefer candidates with a university degree.
Complete a bachelor degree majoring in computer science, IT or a related field. This usually takes three years of full-time study.
Secure an internship to build experience.
Develop experience across one or more IT roles. You could start off as a Service Desk Analyst.
Consider completing industry certifications in programming languages such as Python and SQL, and software project management methodologies such as Lean and Agile.
