What's it like to be a Building Inspector?
Building Inspectors are responsible for reviewing the structural integrity and safety of buildings. This includes checking that construction, alterations and installations comply with building codes, ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications. They may examine buildings' structural quality, plumbing systems, heating systems and electrical components. Building Inspectors are typically employed by governments, but they may also work for architectural and engineering firms or be self-employed.
Tasks and duties
- Examining buildings, highways, streets, sewer and water systems, dams, and other structures to ensure that they conform to building codes.
- Evaluating the safety and compliance aspects during the construction, alteration, or repair of buildings and other structures.
- Interpreting and explaining building codes and regulations to builders, homeowners, and other interested parties.
- Documenting the results of inspections and notifying interested parties of code and regulation violations that must be addressed.
- Providing advice on construction plans and blueprints to ensure they meet building codes.
- Collaborating with engineers, architects, and construction teams to address potential problems or risks.
- Keeping up-to-date on changing regulations and maintaining knowledge of the latest construction materials and methods.
