What's it like to be a Geotechnical Engineer?
Geotechnical Engineers specialise in using scientific methods and principles of engineering to collect and interpret information about the earth's surface and subsurface. Their main responsibilities include carrying out geological and geotechnical studies to ensure the soil or rock beneath a proposed structure is firm enough to support it. They identify and manage risks posed by ground conditions to developments in construction, oil, mining and other industries. They typically work with a team of Civil Engineers, Architects, and Construction Managers. The role requires a strong understanding of geology, civil engineering principles and the ability to interpret computer-aided design (CAD) data.
Tasks and duties
- Evaluating geological data and constructing design recommendations for civil engineering projects.
- Assessing risk and designing methods to manage hazards in a geotechnical context such as landslides, rock falls, soil liquefaction and earthquakes.
- Coordinating and supervising site investigations to understand the soil, rock, fault distribution and geological conditions.
- Analysing geotechnical findings from soil and rock sample studies and producing technical design reports.
- Developing design plans and specifications for foundations, embankments, roads and retaining walls.
- Overseeing installation, testing and monitoring of geotechnical systems.
- Interacting and liaising with clients, professionals and contractors regarding technical aspects of a project.
