What's it like to be an Industrial Electrician?
Industrial Electricians are Electricians who work specifically in industrial settings, meaning they work with a lot of heavy machinery and powerful systems. Unlike Electricians who work in domestic or other small-scale settings, Industrial Electricians often work with very high voltage and currents, so a high degree of accuracy and safety is important. Industrial Electricians may be required to install, troubleshoot and provide maintenance on equipment and systems. They often work for or run their own electrical business that visits job sites when they are needed, but some larger companies also have their own Industrial Electricians.
Tasks and duties
- Troubleshooting and repairing electrical and material handling equipment.
- Evaluating, making recommendations and providing guidance on required repairs and maintenance.
- Performing scheduled assessments and preventive maintenance on equipment.
How to become an Industrial Electrician
To become an Industrial Electrician, you will need to complete an apprenticeship and a theory certificate and register with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB). The requirements are the same for Electricians in many other settings.

- 3.
Get a formal qualification while training such as a New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering Theory and Practice (Trade) (Level 4).
- 4.
Become a licensed electrical worker with the EWRB.
