What's it like to be an IT Project Manager?
IT Project Managers are experienced IT (information technology) professionals who are responsible for managing IT projects within a business or organisation. The type of projects that IT Project Managers work on depends on the nature of the organisations they work in, but could involve IT system security, software development or product launches and upgrades. As well as technical skills, IT Project Managers typically need skills in communication, collaboration, project planning and leadership.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing IT needs and finding technology solutions to meet those needs.
- Developing information technology strategies, policies and plans.
- Overseeing the installation and maintenance of IT infrastructure.
- Directing IT operations and setting priorities between system developments, maintenance and operations.
- Overseeing the security of IT systems.
How to become an IT Project Manager
IT Project Managers typically have a relevant degree and experience working on IT projects.

Complete a bachelor degree in a relevant subject, such as computer science or information technology.
- 2.
Gain several years of experience working in an IT department. As IT Project Managers have leadership responsibilities, they are generally very experienced in their field.

Consider upskilling by completing a qualification in project management, either run or approved by the Project Management Institute New Zealand.
