What's it like to be an Insurance Broker?
An Insurance Broker (Kaitohutohu Inihua) provides advice on personal, commercial or corporate insurance products. They work with and for their clients to help them secure the insurance that best suits their needs, and advise them on the options available to them. They act as a point of contact between a client and an insurance company, and can negotiate for the client. Insurance Brokers must have a wide and up-to-date knowledge of the insurance industry and relevant laws and regulations.
Tasks and duties
- Creating lists of potential clients.
- Interviewing clients to explain insurance features and determine the appropriate type and amount of coverage.
- Negotiating policy premiums and conditions on behalf of clients.
- Advising clients on changes to current policies.
- Researching and reviewing insurance offerings from multiple providers and providing recommendations.
- Arranging insurance policies according to client instructions and preferences.
How to become an Insurance Broker
Insurance Brokers in New Zealand must hold a Certificate in Financial Services.

Complete a New Zealand Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5). This is a 16-week course but can be completed part time over a longer period.

Consider completing a bachelor degree in a relevant field, such as finance, accounting or business studies. While a university degree is not a strict requirement to work as an Insurance Broker, it may broaden your career opportunities.
