What's it like to be an Interior Designer?
An Interior Designer (Kaitātai o-Roto) works with clients to plan and design interiors, and then implement those designs by liaising with tradespeople. Their overall aim is to make each space functional and aesthetically pleasing. An Interior Designer’s role can include a range of tasks such as preparing drawings, planning lighting and other infrastructure, and sourcing furniture and furnishings.
Tasks and duties
- Consulting with clients on creative briefs and using design principles to fulfil the brief.
- Creating design, style and mood concepts that fit with architectural plans, selecting colour schemes, sourcing furniture and fixtures, and ensuring all work fits within the client’s budget.
- Using computer programs such as AutoCad and Photoshop to design and create professional concept drawings of what a space will look like.
How to become an Interior Designer
Most Interior Designers have a tertiary qualification in interior design or a related discipline such as fine art. Some move into Interior Design from other fields and train on the job.

Complete a relevant Bachelor of Design, or a certificate, diploma or short course in Interior Design through a university, polytechnic or private training organisation.

Secure an entry level Interior Design role to gain experience.

After a number of years in the industry, you may choose to go freelance or start your own design studio.
