What's it like to be a Plumber?
Plumbers work with water supply systems. They install and repair pipes, drains, boilers and other infrastructure that connects a water supply to a residential or commercial building. They may also work with gas fittings and appliances. Plumbers often work with other tradespeople such as Builders and Electricians as part of a team on a construction project. They may also run their own business or specialise in working on private residences or commercial buildings.
Tasks and duties
- Studying blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems and materials required.
- Installing hot and cold water systems and associated equipment.
- Installing gas appliances, flues and pressure regulating devices.
- Communicating with clients to understand plumbing issues.
- Collaborating with other tradespeople on a work site.
How to become a Plumber
You usually need to complete a four-year apprenticeship to become a Plumber.

Complete a plumbing apprenticeship through a training provider. This usually takes four years and includes a mix of on-the-job training and online learning modules and assessments.

Register with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB). Your licence must be renewed annually and may require completion of continuing professional development (CPD).

You may also need a driver’s licence to travel to work sites.
