What's it like to be a Product Owner?
Product Owners lead teams that develop products such as software, apps and websites. They take overall responsibility for the product and coordinate the work of multiple teams and stakeholders ranging from consumer research to software development. Product Owners typically use the Scrum Agile methodology as a framework for projects and work with both the business and IT arms of organisations. They typically work in technology industries.
Tasks and duties
- Knowing every part of a product, its purpose, how it works and what each small part does.
- Understanding the end-user, who they are and what they need, and how the product functions properly for them.
- Planning work for the development team and helping them set goals.
- Keeping stakeholders updated on product development progress.
- Developing criteria that determines the required amount and quality of work.
How to become a Product Owner
You don’t need a formal qualification to become a Product Owner, however a degree in a relevant field can be helpful and is often preferred by employers.

Consider completing a bachelor degree in information technology or business. This usually takes three to four years of study.

Secure an internship in the industry while studying to gain experience.

Gain experience working within a product team.
