What's it like to be a Rigger?
Riggers are skilled professionals who assist in moving and positioning heavy equipment or loads in various industries, most commonly in construction and manufacturing. They use mechanical load movement equipment such as pulleys, chains and hoists to safely relocate large objects. A rigger's responsibilities involve understanding load calculations, conducting safety inspections on gear and equipment, and communicating effectively with crane operators. Riggers work mainly outdoors and their role demands sound physical health and the ability to work in potentially dangerous environments.
Tasks and duties
- Setting, aligning and levelling heavy equipment machinery.
- Selecting gear such as cables, pulleys and winches according to load weights and sizes.
- Attaching loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving.
- Using hoists and pulleys to lift, lower or position heavy objects.
- Inspecting and testing rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
- Dismantling and storing rigging equipment after use.
- Communicating with team members during rigging processes to ensure safety.
