What's it like to be a Legal Counsel?
Legal Counsels are professional Lawyers who advise and represent organisations or individuals in matters of law. They interpret existing laws, rulings and regulations as well as provide advice on potential legal issues in proposed decisions or actions. Often they negotiate deals, draft legal documents and manage risks to protect their clients from legal action. Legal Counsels may work in a variety of industries such as corporations, government agencies, non-profit organisations or law firms.
Tasks and duties
- Advising management and other stakeholders on legal rights, obligations and risks associated with business operations.
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating contract agreements and other legal documents to ensure an organisation's interests are protected.
- Researching and analysing complex legal issues and presenting options for resolution to management.
- Representing the organisation in legal proceedings or in negotiation with third parties.
- Creating and implementing organisation-wide legal policies and procedures to meet legal compliance.
- Providing legal training to different departments within an organisation.
- Keeping up-to-date with changes in legislation that may affect an organisation's operations.
